| WHAT IS
LEADERSHIP ELMORE COUNTY? |
County
leadership development programs are being used
nationwide to assist with individual and community
development in a rapidly changing world. In 2000,
representatives of the three Chambers of Commerce,
Millbrook, Tallassee and Wetumpka, met with
Extension educators to design a program that would
fit the needs of Elmore County residents. The
Leadership Elmore County program began in
September 2001 with the first class of 20
individuals.
Leadership Elmore County is a
9-session course, conducted annually, and designed
to build teamwork, enhance leadership skills and
examine issues within the county. The focus of the
one-day sessions, that begin in September and
conclude in May, is teaching participants about
their communities. Alumni stay involved through
projects, assisting with new classes, idea sharing
and an annual meeting. The emphasis is not on
“who” are the leaders, but on the process
requiring people to work together to create an
environment for quality in all areas of Elmore
County.
Leadership Elmore County encourages
individuals to learn, to question and to dream.
Leaders are assisted with the knowledge and skills
needed to serve their communities for the future.
Each class participates in a project, designed to
serve a county need. At present, the program is made up of 142 graduates from eight classes, plus
the members of the original steering committee.

- To inform and
educate members, and, where appropriate, the
community at large on current issues and
challenges facing our community;
- To continue the
"networking" begun as participants, with
emphasis on the interrelated needs of diverse
constituent groups;
- To allow and
encourage members to form, independently, action
oriented task groups which focus on priority
issues within the communities;
- To identify
organizational and individual opportunities for
community involvement and assist in the
placement of participants in these
positions;
- To conduct
annually a Leadership Elmore County program, to
be carried out in a series of sessions for the
following purposes:
- To identify and
select highly motivated leaders to participate
in the program;
- To inform,
challenge, and otherwise educate the
participants of the opportunities and needs of
the community, as well as the dynamics of social
and economic change;
- To counsel
participants on management and leadership skills
and their application to volunteer community
leadership positions;
- To develop inter
personal relationships and teamwork among the
participants, which will provide a common ground
for working together on community
projects;
- To create a
dialogue and rapport among the participants and
existing community leadership.
